I have just read the following in the latest PPA Newsletter. It do think it is interesting that the situation is phrased in such a way as to pre-suppose that cyclists are at fault, and that the solution is to simply ban them from Chapman’s Peak Drive:

WILL CYCLISTS BE BANNED ON CHAPMANS PEAK?

Several complaints have been received by the operators regarding the behaviour of cyclists on Chapman’s Peak, riding abreast and / or taking up the whole road. This has prompted discussions of banning cycling on Chappies. This cannot happen! Please ride responsibly: Keep left, and make sure the cyclists who ride around you do the same. Let’s keep Chappies open for cyclists.

The issue of cyclists and motorists sharing the road is ongoing and often leads to some pretty heated confrontations. I am both a cyclist and a motorist, and it is an unfortunate fact that I have witnessed both motorists and cyclists behaving abominably on the road, often with no consideration for anyone at all.

A few points:

  • Cyclists are still guilty of riding two (and often more) abreast. It’s not on guys.
  • Whether you are in the right or not, as a cyclist you are almost guaranteed to be on the losing side of any collision.
  • Motor vehicles of any kind should be taking it easy, and enjoying the view, not rushing to pass cyclists.
  • I have personally seen a tour bus come unreasonably close to cyclists riding with all due consideration on the side of the road.
  • This is a relatively small section of road, already monitored on one end, therefore it should be fairly easy to monitor the problem and come up with a solutions that works for all road users.

With GoPro cameras becoming more common, maybe it’s a good idea for cyclists who have them to record their rides as possible evidence of dangerous drivers? The footage could then be used to gain some insight into the problem, or even prosecute / publicly shame offending drivers. Of course the same goes for cyclists being recorded by other cyclists or motorists! Are there not CCTV cameras on Chapman’s Peak? Could footage from these not be used for the same purpose?
