Prince Albert

My annual birthday weekend treat in September 2020 was a trip to Prince Albert.

As soon as you reach the northern end of Meiringspoort there can be no doubt that you are in the Karoo. Scrubby bushes and dry thorn trees, endless blue skies and dry, healthy air in your lungs welcome you to the arid region.

The town was extremely quiet, most likely due to the effects that the recent COVID lockdown restrictions had on tourism. The stillness of the streets combined with the feeling of space from the wide, straight gum-lined avenues with the quiet Karoo air made it easy to imagine how people would seek out these conditions to recuperate from illness.

We spent the night at the quaint Ta Mala’s Self-Catering Cottages. We were booked into the quaint and comfortable Meerkat Cottage which has a history of more than 200 years.

We had breakfast at the Lazy Lizard before driving over the Swartberg Pass on our way home.
