After reading “Born to Run” by Chris McDougall, I am sold on the idea of spending some time out of my Salomon XT Wings to strengthen my feet and ankles. I am currently wearing a pair of New Balance Minimus MT00 Minimalist Trail Shoes as casual shoes for this purpose.

I think I have experienced most of the rookie injuries in the first year or so of my trail running: ITB on the right then left side, a badly sprained ankle, and some nasty lingering trouble in my right arch (please no-one say the words plantar fasciitis). I wish I had been to see my podiatrist and physio before I started running!

I am already totally “soled” on Vibram soles: I have Hi-Tec Trail Eruption and Merrel Phaser Inferno hiking shoes, and Merrell Waterpro Rogues — all with Vibram soles — and I swear by them for comfort, performance and durability.

Whilst I am not about to toss my Salomons out just yet, I am convinced by the merits of running barefoot (or at least barefoot-style) as a way to adapt to a better running style, and to strengthen your feet and ankles in the process.

Care must be taken in transitioning to minimalist footwear, however: you must adopt a suitable running style, and your body must adapt to amongst other factors minimal cushioning, heel raise, and foot support.
