A belay device is one of the few absolutely essential pieces of sports climbing equipment you will need to purchase.
This simple piece of gear is attached to the climbing harness of the person belaying. It is used in conjunction with a carabiner, like my Black Diamond Rocklock Screwgate Carabiner. The rope is controlled by running it through the device and the carabiner, which is fastened to the belay loop of your harness.
