I bravely ran the 2012 Red Hill Marathon the weekend after Totalsports Terra Firma, and came apart after the Red Hill climb and descent! At that stage my theory was that if I was to be doing IronMan, running a quick marathon should be a regular occurrence. Clearly lack of recovery got the better of me!
Where: Fish Hoek Athletics Club
When: 06h00, 19 January 2013
Distance: 36.2km & 42.2km
Both races will proceed from Fish Hoek Athletics Club, through Sun Valley, along Kommetjie Road to Kommetjie, up Slangkop, through Misty Cliffs and Scarborough to the Perdekloof intersection.
The 36.2 km Classic will fork to the left up Red Hill. The Marathon will fork to the right and do a 6 km loop towards Cape Point returning to the Perdekloof intersection where it re-joins the Classic up Red Hill. Both races are then run over Red Hill, down towards Simonstown Main Road and back through Glencairn and Fish Hoek before returning to the start.
The sections along the coast are stunningly beautiful as well as very runnable — the slightly boring Cape Point-direction out-and-back leg and the challenging Red Hill adding some teeth to the course.
