This trip is the fourth in our series of Wild Coast holidays, each one allowing us to hike another section of the magical coastline. Our previous hike was from Kei Mouth west to Gonubie. This time we started at The Mitford in Morgan Bay, heading east and spending the night at Trennery’s, then Wavecrest, and then back to Seagulls. We chose to do this “slack-packer” version as the first hike post my 2022 spinal surgery. We each carried a light day pack with the bare essentials. My deuter futura, purchased in 2009, is still up to the task!
Morgan Bay to Trennery’s
We started our hike from Morgan Bay, heading east along the coast to the Cape Morgan lighthouse. The trail heads up the lighthouse through thick coastal forest. At one point after passing the lighthouse, we elected to head back to the water’s edge which was probably a mistake as the going across the boulders was tough. I highly recommend staying on the jeep track for this section.
Pedestrians cross free on the Kei River Mouth Ferry while cars pay R150 each way. After hopping off on the eastern bank, we headed right along the river between the bank and the salt marshes.

Trennery’s to Wavecrest

Wavecrest organises your “ferry” across the Khobonqaba River. We did not know this, assuming that there would be someone to take us across. We eventually quite literally took the plunge from the rocks and swam across to the sandbank on the other side. Fortunately, it was some hours after spring low tide and the current was flowing strongly up the river making our crossing relatively safe.
Wavecrest to Seagulls
Naturally, we allowed the receptionist at Wavecrest to organise the “ferry” for our return crossing of the Khobonqaba River. We were paddled across in style, one at a time in a sit-on-top kayak by the ferryman.
We could easily see the remainder of the wreck of the Jacaranda 1971 when we passed as it was spring low tide.
