A couple of us got over-excited in the run-up to the Big 5 Challenge and entered a couple of additional events. The Dragon Mile Swim was one of these, and I was good to see some of the top dogs from the Big 5 Challenge stepping gingerly into the cool lagoon water on Friday at lunchtime.

My Salomon Featherbed Coelacanth Trail Run 2013

Something magical happened for me in Knysna: I had lost interest in running the same old rocky mountain trails in Cape Town after the 2011 Otter Trail Run; after a few years of loving running wild, the sport seemed to have lost its appeal. The sweeping single-track and lush beauty of the Garden Route have wakened the wild in me, and my Salomon Featherbed Trail Run result is proof.

My Greyton Classic MTB 2013

Last year’s MTB route was a mud bath of note, and I was expecting the same again this year despite the organisers letting us know the route would exclude the worst of the bogs. I was wrong. Someone has been putting a huge amount of effort into building single-track in the Greyton area, and we got to play on some amazing trails.

My Arabella Challenge MTB 2013

The inaugural Arabella MTB Challenge 2013 was officially my first multi-day event. Any discomfort that I may have experienced in the saddle was instantly erased from my mind by a combination of the slick organisation of the event, the quality of the trail we rode over the two days, and the luxury of the Arabella Hotel & Spa.
