This is an easy walk that offers the added benefit of starting and ending at the Silvermine Reservoir which is perfect for a picnic and a refreshing swim. The deck offers unparalleled views of Hout Bay and The Sentinel.
Getting there: park in the Silvermine West parking lot. You will pay R15 per adult at the gate, or use your Wild Card.
Difficulty: easy walk, some hills, easy to follow jeep track and trail
Starting from the parking lot, follow the signposts directing you up past the right-hand side of the Reservoir (some of the paths from the Reservoir are currently under rehabilitation, so its easier to go this way). You will be following a jeep-track up headed in the general direction of the mast.
The track goes up a fairly steep hill, but after this it is pretty easy-going. There is an alternative, steep trail with a signpost announcing a shortcut to Elephant’s Eye which is a bit quicker on the way up.
Head for the valley below and to the left of the mast — this is Prinskasteel Valley. As the jeep track bends left (south toward the Noordhoek / Chapman’s Peak direction), keep a look-out for the trail leading off to the right in the Hout Bay direction.
This path will lead you over the last small rise, and finally through some strange berms to the look-out deck. The look-out platform is actually at the top of Blackburn Ravine — you will see the start of the trail far below you as it leaves Chapman’s Peak Drive. Take a seat on a comfortable bench and break out the refreshments whilst you breathe in the views!
