Pimped-out Airstream Trailers on a hillside with a dam in the foreground overlooking the Elgin Valley. What a heavenly destination for a surprise birthday weekend!

Getting there: take the N2 from Cape Town. About 5km past Peregrine Farmstall take Valley Road to the right.

We were pleasantly surprised by the restaurant: a no-frills affair offering tasty food and local wines (and brandy). A full buffet breakfast is included in your room rate. We had dinner on the Saturday night. All the wines on the wine list are from the Elgin Wine Route, and the bar stocks local apple or pear cider on tap (depending on the season) and various rather special Oude Molen brandies.

Next to the restaurant area is a large wooden deck with a swimming pool. A bit cold for a dip in September, but you can bet it’s a welcome feature when the summer heat descends on the valley.

We stayed in “Life Before Colour” which is tastefully decorated in monochrome and transports you to the Victorian era. The intimate set-up includes a ginormous bed and victorian ball and claw bath in the boudoir.
