My Matroosberg Skymarathon 2013

South Africa’s first sanctioned Skymarathon was held at Matroosberg Private Nature Reserve near Ceres in the Western Cape.

The start sent us down the dirt road for a quick little warm-up before the Big Climb of the day: the 4×4 trail up to Matroosberg Peak. It took me 2 hours to reach the top of the big climb which ended just beneath the summit. AJ took 1 hour 19 minutes to claim King of the Mountain, and Robyn Kime 1:29:00 to claim Queen of the Mountain.

Do not underestimate the last 10km loop. It contains a significant and fairly difficult climb which will test you after the first 25 kilometers!

I had a fairly comfortable finish with a few decent kilometres at the end which was reassuring for me as I have not been  doing much distance. Nice to know I could still hold my form.

Despite the mammoth climb, the total elevation gain of 1689m comes in third behind Otter (1851m) and PUFfeR (2369m).
