Race #8 of the 2012 / 2013 Best 4 Surfski Series took place at Lagoon Beach, Milnerton on Sunday 20 January 2013. A windy, sunny day in a stunning setting!
Pre-race entries and registration took place in the parking lot at Lagoon Beach between 07h00 – 08h30. The short course started at 09h00 and the long course at 09h10: the paddlers seemed keen to start despite the strong south-easter, and both starts were on time.
The course was a simple affair heading with paddlers heading through small surf to a buoy before heading straight into the teeth of the wind to a buoy near the container depot of the Cape Town Harbour — one loop for the short course and two for the long. There was no swell to mention, so the downwind paddle was less fun than it could have been had there been some runs.
Delicious Butlers pizza and ice-cold Red Bull were handed to paddlers on the beach as the paddlers came out the water! It’s no secret I am a HUGE Butlers fan, so it was fantastic to have a few slices of pizza after the race — I am no strange to eating pizza for breakfast!
Prize giving was held on The Lagoon Beach Hotel’s pool deck which adjoins the beach and has unbeatable views of the ocean, Robben Island, Table Bay, Signal Hill and Lion’s Head, and the Mother City with Table Mountain as it’s backdrop. I had a quick dip in the pool, ordered some ice-cold beverages from the Hotel bar, and settled down to enjoy another humorous Mocke (@DawidMocke) presentation whilst enjoying the view.
Once more a huge thank you to all involved, especially the Mockes who organise each race, race in each race, present a fun prize-giving, and then do it all again the following week.
