Badkloof TrailBadkloof Trail

This is a short and easy walk through Badkloof in Montagu.

Getting there: park at the Avalon Springs parking lot. Walk toward the river, and then turn left and walk along the bank with the river on your right.
Difficulty: casual walk on a path in the riverbed

If you start from the Montagu end, you will need to register and pay your R10 at Die Ou Meul. It is probably best to start at Avalon Springs in any case — that way you can reward yourself with a soak in the hot baths when you return!

The path meanders from side to side, crossing the sandy valley floor and river often. It is fairly well maintained and marked out, but due to fairly frequent flooding, changes every so often. You are quite likely to spot the after-affects of the last flood as you move through the valley.

There are plenty of bolted sports climbing routes in the kloof, and you are sure to see some climbers on your way. You will be able to see the bolted routes — simply look for white chalk smudges leading up the rock on either side of you.

It gets incredibly hot in the kloof, and the water is not drinkable, so you need to take plenty along.
