For as long as I can remember now, I have wanted to take a camping trip up the Garden Route to paddle all the rivers, lakes and lagoons that one passes along the route. Each time I drive the stretch from Mossel Bay to Plettenberg Bay I look longingly at the stretches of water, imagining myself paddling around the bend in the distance. X Lakes Summer is just shy of 100km of paddling and cycling from George to Knysna.
Chain Gang Events is furthering the Garden Route’s claim to the title “adventure racing destination of South Africa” with the X Lakes Summer Race. The event starts at Saasveld in George, and finishes at Thesen Island in Knysna, and involves mountain biking and paddling in teams or as a solo entrant.
This one will require some logistics and a dedicated seconding vehicle to keep you going on your adventure.
|1||Saasveld to Wilderness||Bike||14.5|
|2||Wilderness to Island Lake||Paddle||9.2|
|3||Island Lake to Pine Lake Marina||Bike||13|
|4||Pine Lake Marina to Hoogekraal||Paddle||9.8|
|5||Hoogekraal to Old Drift||Bike||39.4|
|6||Old Drift to Thesen Island||Paddle||11.0|
According to the website, the MTB legs are all on non-technical gravel or tar roads. The Merrell Eden Duo Adventure Race takes place in this area, so I know from experience that the terrain will be breathtakingly beautiful.
