A new 300km endurance road cycle tour has just been announced!
When: 27 April 2013
I have just received this via email:
The Cape Monster: 300km — 500 riders — 1 day
2013 sees the launch of an extreme cycling event that has been in the making for two years. ASG Events present more than 50 cycling events countrywide, but none like the challenge we’ve devised on 27 April in the Boland.
We invite 500 brave souls to take on the ultimate roadbike challenge in South Africa over a distance of 300km. The Cape Monster constitutes the longest single day challenge on a road bike in South Africa and we must stress that this event is not for the feint hearted.
The events starts and finishes at the picturesque Allee Bleue wine farm, just outside Franschhoek in the beautiful Boland winelands.
It covers 300 daunting kilometres through Paarl, Wellington, Wolseley, Tulbagh, Porterville, the Piketberg, Moreesburg and Riebeeck West, before rolling back through Wellington and Paarl onto the finish at the 5 star wine estate.
The race will start at 4am and the final cut-off is at midnight.
The total vertical ascent on the ride is 2581m.
Participants will take off in bunches of 100 riders. Riders will be grouped based on ability and required start / finish time.
The fastest riders, at an average of 35km/h will complete the ride in 7-8 hours while the slowest guys and girls will come in at 20 hours at an average of 15km/h.
Rolling road closure is provided for major bunches while traffic rules apply to all outside the closure bubbles.
Allee Blue will host the Cape Monster on Friday night (6 April 2013) and Saturday night (7 April 2013).
Riders will be treated to a pre-race dinner on Friday evening during which the pre-race briefing will take place.
On Saturday evening dinner will be awaiting the extremists who make it to the finish line.
Dinner on both evenings and the race HQ will be in the awe inspiring Grand Hall at Allee Bleue.
Riders who would like to sleep over at Allee Bleue can choose to either book one of the 5-star accommodation options at the farm or make use of the race village, which is set in picturesque surroundings, where they can pitch their tents.
Mobile showers and toilets will be provided in a safe and secure environment and food will be on sale for riders who need to stock up – over and above the provided dinners.
Riders will receive a race pack sponsored by High 5 which will contain enough energy aids to get you through the ride.
In addition there will be a host of seconding vehicles with liquids and neutral service equipment on hand as well as various food a drink stops, provided by schools and churches along the way.
No outside seconding is allowed.
Medical support will be provided by MMC Event Medical Specialists, who provide this service to all of ASG’s events.
Riders have to maintain an average of 15km/h and the organisation will enforce cut-offs along the route at towns through which the event passes.
Cut-off points will be communicated during the race briefing.
Entry fee for the event is R1000 and this includes both dinners and overnight stay facilities at Allee Bleue.
It also includes all the back-up outlined above.
All finishers receive a Cape Monster medal and T-shirt.
Riders with existing medical conditions have to get in contact with us for clearance to take part in the event.
