I took part in the inaugural Stanley’s Mountain Run 2010. It’s a tough run that is set to become classic on the trail calendar: well worth the trip out to Ladismith.
When: Saturday, 28 May 2011
Where: Ladismith School sports field
Getting there: Ladismith lies after Barrydale on Route 62, some 300km from Cape Town. You could take the N1 and then go via Roberston / Montagu on Route 62; or take the N1 to just after Swellendam, then head North, joining Route 62 at Barrydale; or take the N2 all the way to Riversdale, and then head North on the R323.
This race is presented by Ugene Nel of Quantum Adventures, so expect an out-of-the-ordinary (and usually tough) course, great organization, a fun and friendly vibe with some real trail runners, and some tequila!
The tough course takes you up the mountain behind the town to Stanley’s Light. This landmark is a light powered by a small water-driven dynamo: when the river is flowing, the light is shining. We even got to meet Oom Stanley himself! Last year there was a light dusting of snow on the mountain top, and we had to run over some rocks covered in black ice which added a new and tricky dimension to the days running!
After running across the face of the mountain there is a challenging descent on some very technical trail. Although at this stage you are heading back toward the start, you are quickly taken on a detour up a small koppie, and all along a ridge until eventually you drop back down to the finish line.
