I read some advice in a triathlon magazine recommending: spend some time trying out different goggles before race day, find a pair that works, buy a second pair of those goggles, and set them aside for race day after wearing them only once or twice in training. Makes sense! I have been swimming with an old pair of Speedo swim goggle for quite some time now. They are not up to the task anymore, so I started looking around for a pair that would be up to the serious task of a 3.8km open-water swim. Candidate No 1: the Speedo Rift Pro Swimming Goggles…
The Speedo Rift Pro Swimming Goggles are fashioned on a full dive mask style rather than the more minimal swim google, so there is no adjustable nose piece. The straps are adjustable.
They are obviously quite a bit larger than traditional swimming goggles, offering great peripheral vision which helps when finding your way around an open-water swim course. I usually find the smaller shaped goggles require you to wear the straps quite tight to keep a good fit; this is not necessary with the Rift Pro’s and they sit very comfortable on your face.
The additional size is most certainly not the most drag efficient, and I am not sure yet if I will actually race in them, or find a more traditional swim goggle for events. They are extremely comfortable for training.
Please be aware that they do not float! I discovered this to my horror and spent 10 minutes searching for them at the bottom of the cola-coloured water of Silvermine Reservoir.
