I bought a Salomon XT Wings 5 Hydration Backpack for this year’s Stanley’s Mountain Run to ensure that I would be able to comfortably carry all the required equipment.
Trail run organisers are getting increasingly strict on the gear that runners must carry on trail runs. It’s pretty standard now to be required to carry some combination of each of the following:
- liquid,
- food,
- wet-weather gear,
- medical kit,
- cellphone,
- compass,
- space blanket.
Whilst my preference is to run with my Salomon Twin Belt, and my Camelbak Octane XC has served me well on many runs, neither are capable of carrying much gear at all.
I use a Nalgene CXC Reservoir 3L Rapid Fill bladder if the two water bottles are not going to be enough. The pack has an adjustable sternum strap and waist-belt.
It is also quite useful as a light daypack for hiking. You can carry your liquids in the two 600ml water bottles, and use the main storage area for snacks and gear instead of a bladder.
