MEDIA RELEASE JUNE 2013
HUGO AND MARAIS PREPARE FOR YET ANOTHER BATTLE
XTERRA SA supporters can look forward to a battle of note when top XTERRA Warriors Dan Hugo and Stuart Marais face up at the Totalsports XTERRA PEZULA presented by REHIDRAT® SPORT on Thursday, 04 July 2013.
In January this year Marais caused a major upset at the Totalsports Challenge presented by Liberty Medical Scheme and REHIDRAT® SPORT beating Hugo to the finish line and breaking his six-year reign. To say that these two warriors have a score to settle would be an understatement, making the Totalsports XTERRA PEZULA an event not to be missed. Both warriors will also be gunning for the coveted title of Big5 Sports Challenge Champion, a title currently held by Marais.
According to Hugo, his form should be sharp at XTERRA PEZULA. “I’m heading back to Cape Town from Sao Paolo, having competed at XTERRA Brazil this past Saturday. I have an important XTERRA in the US mid July, so I’m focused and keen to maintain form through the Knysna festival. The toughest part of XTERRA PEZULA is by far the 3km run that starts off the race. Once the race settles I think it’s a great course, user-friendly for the front and rear of the field. Sure the steep climb after the second transition is brutal, but by then you’ll be into your stride. Stuart Marais and Kevin Evans did really well last year, both are sure to be solid contenders again. That said, I’d enjoy seeing my travel and training buddy Bradley Weiss run to his full potential and cause an upset. My advice to first time competitors is to arrive early and have clean warm gear for afterwards as it’s a social vibe. As for the race, be prepared to embrace some mud,” says Hugo who managed an impressive 3rd place at XTERRA Brazil on Saturday, 22 July 2013 behind Conrad Stoltz (South Africa) and Felipe Moletta (Brazil) respectively.
“Winning XTERRA PEZULA in 2012 was a great day for me,” says Stuart Marais. “The support was huge, but taking the win on tired legs made it extra special, as part of the Big 5 Sport Challenge. XTERRA is always fun, there are loads of people, a great vibe and a brilliant route. The fact that it is part of the Pick ‘n Pay Knysna Oyster Festival makes it a “bucket list” XTERRA for many. The course suits strong mountain bikers. I think my main competition just might be Kevin Evans. Dan Hugo will also be a threat, as will Bradley Weiss”.
XTERRA competitors to look out for in the men’s race will include Kevin Evans, Bradley Weiss, Theo Blignaut, Daniel Carleton and Kent Horner, while in the women’s race Carla van Huyssteen and Susan Sloan are top contenders.
