Darling

Darling Train Station sign

Darling is a small farming town up the West Coast. This is the land of Duckitts and Tannie Evita.

Getting there: head up the R27 from Melkbos; 50km further turn right and drive 15km on the R315 to reach Darling

Of course Darling is best known to me as the home of Evita Bezuidenhout, South Africa’s best-loved Tannie, satirist Pieter-Dirk Uys  who performs his shows at Evita se Perron, a cabaret venue and restaurant. There is a museum of sorts in the building displaying an assortment of memorabilia, mostly related to Apartheid, that all South Africans should take the time to browse.

The town also hosts a wildflower show in September, which includes the Orchid Fair at Duckitt Nurseries.

In more recent years the wine industry has blossomed in the area, with estates such as Ormonde, Cloof Wine Estate and Darling Cellars. It is also the home of Darling Brew craft beer.

Cloof Wine Estate also hosts the annual Rocking the Daisies music festival.
