MEDIA RELEASE FEBRUARY 2014
IMPI CHALLENGE RETURNS TO CAPE TOWN
The action-packed IMPI Challenge returns to Lievland Wine Estate and Wiesenhof Legacy Park (Stellenbosch) on Saturday, 5 April 2014 and Sunday, 06 April 2014. Participants wanting to hone up on skills before then will be pleased to hear that the Synergy Health and Fitness Club in Stellenbosch are offering training camps as a build up to this much-loved event.
“In 2013 I entered the IMPI Elite Race with the intention to win, as R10 000 is a lot of money,” says Chantel Nienaber of the Synergy Health and Fitness Club. “I was doing well until I got to the monkey bars where I kept slipping due to my muddy gloves. I realised that if your goal is to be competitive you need to train prior to the event on an obstacle course. Event though I am a personal trainer, a competitive trail runner and do daily weight and functional training, I was not prepared for the obstacles that one encounters during the IMPI Challenge”.
“When I relocated to Stellenbosch in December 2013 to get involved with Synergy Health and Fitness, I suggested to the new owners that they build an adventure styled obstacle course,” continues Nienaber. “Designed to help people prepare for the IMPI Challenge, our obstacles will have participants climbing over high gum poles, monkey bars, cargo nets, rope work, leopard crawling, balance beams and wall hopping. Members can also look forward to some running on Blaauklippen’s vineyard track, encountering various obstacles like flipping gum poles, carrying sandbags and hauling tyres over this rugged terrain. I will definitely take part in the IMPI Elite Race in April, but this time round I will not go in as a novice”.
Combining trail running with an adventure style obstacle course, there are five structures to choose from when entering the IMPI Challenge:
- Traditional IMPI Challenge: Conquer 18 obstacles over 10 – 12km
- IMPI Dash – Compacted Challenge: Families have the chance to compete together. The course will be 5 – 7km with 12 obstacles (ages 10 – 15 years, all adults welcome).
- IMPI Elite: The course will be 15 – 20km with 25 tough obstacles.
- IMPI Corporate – Trample your boss: There is no better team building exercise than this! Conquer 18 obstacles over 10 – 12km.
- IMPI Mini: This mini course will be around 1km and feature smaller versions of some of our favourite obstacles (ages 6 – 10 years, all adults welcome).
The race categories cater for a variety of athletes, from elite sportspersons, competent and beginner runners and families looking for a fun experience. Participants can enter individually or as part of a team (teams vary in size from 2 – 10 people, although team members start together, they do not need to finish together).
