Highlands Road

I have twice now taken a detour on my way back from the Kleinmond area which took us off the R44 and onto Highlands Road. It is good quality dirt road all the way, and can easily be undertaken in your German luxury sedan (but please be careful of the idiots speeding in the 4×4’s).

The R44 is the road that follows the coast from Gordon’s Bay to Kleinmond, passing through Rooi Els, Pringle Bay and Betty’s Bay. The section from Gordon’s Bay to Rooi Els is called Clarence Drive, and is a scenic drive comparable to Chapman’s Peak Drive.

You are driving in the general vicinity of the Kogelberg area and so will see glorious expanses of fynbos; there were plentiful Suikerbossies all around. Also take note of the sign for the lovely Perdeberg Trail which will allow you to see the wealth of fynbos that makes this area is famous for.

You are driving through the SAFCOL Highlands Plantation, so mostly you will see pine plantations. We also saw what must have been the big alpha-male of a troupe heading off into the pines.

You will soon be treated to sweeping views of the Elgin Valley before the road descends into the valley itself. The Elgin Valley is possibly the most fertile land in the Western Cape, and the lush greenness all around is almost overwhelming.

We stopped off for a Springbok Venison pie at Peregrine Farmstall before heading back into Cape Town on the N2.
