Garmin Foot Pod

When I originally blogged about the Garmin Forerunner 910XT I meant to update my post as I discovered more about the unit through use. As I am currently reviewing the Garmin fēnix (which is compatible with this device) I thought I would start by giving the Garmin Foot Pod a quick review of its own.

The Garmin Foot Pod can be used with compatible Garmin devices to measure the cadence of your stride when walking, hiking and running. Using accelerometers it is able to count your footfalls.

According to the Garmin website: “Unlike simple pedometers, this foot pod uses advanced MEMS inertial-sensor technology to analyze your movements and is responsive to stride-length changes to achieve 98 percent accuracy for speed and distance.

It can be used with or without GPS, either if your unit does not have GPS capabilities, or it does but you are indoors or otherwise unable to pick-up satellite signal (this requires calibration).

It is powered by a 3V Lithium battery which is readily available in stores (I bought an Energizer 2032 at Clicks for under R20). The battery is easy to replace and the process requires no tools. The battery had lasted for about a year and a half of use — I replaced it after receiving a notification on the Forerunner that it was running low.

It clips neatly into your shoelaces, and it is ANT+ enabled so it pairs with your device wirelessly. I have worn it in all weather conditions and even on the Bloukrans River crossing during the Otter Trail Run which attests to its waterproof qualities!
