The First Ascent Trail run is a 12 km race in the Muizenberg mountains. It features a mean ascent from the start-line, and some wicked single-track sections.
When: Sunday, 12 December 2010
I took part in the 2009 event: it was my first taste of racing on a technical course, and I loved it! The trail leads straight up the Muizenberg mountains from Boyes Drive, Lower Steenberg Peak and Muizenberg Peak above on your right and left respectively. On reaching the top, you head over the ridge pass a large radio mast, and then make a big counter-clockwise loop through the Silvermine East area. It then drops down above Muizenberg almost to Boyes Drive again before leading you back up and over St James Peak — this section is technical single track and will have you working hard! It then drops back down to the finish at Boyes Drive the same way you came up at the start: a knee-quaking slalom ride of a descent!
Its worth taking part in this one just to hear Ugene’s sense of humor at the race briefing as well as at prize giving afterwards! And last year I won some awesome HI-TEC Trail Eruption hiking shoes in the lucky draw!
