 I generally ride without gloves, mostly because I would not bother trying to put them on in a triathlon with wet, fumbling hands. Possibly not such a smart idea in the event of an accident. [...]  Whilst I do not consider myself accident-prone, I have been concussed enough times that it is would now dangerous for it to happen again: the last concussion landed me unconscious in hospital for 12 hours with no memory of the accident. So when I picked up my new cannondale SL2 29er there was no way I was leaving the store without a helmet on my head!
