Algeria

Algeria is a beautiful camp-site in the Cederberg Wilderness Area run by CapeNature. I have visited it on numerous occasions to have a last dip in the crystal clear waters of the Rondegat River to wash of the dust before driving back to Cape Town, and finally stayed here on a wet Easter long-weekend!

Getting there: from Cape Town, head north on the N7, passing Porterville then Citrusdal. About 25km after Citrusdal you will find the turn-off to Algeria on the right. Follow the good dirt road over Nieuwoudts Pass until you reach Algeria.

The dirt road is in good condition, however, if you are arriving late on Friday evening or leaving after dark on a Sunday evening, care must be taken on the passes in the dark.

Algeria sits astride the Rondegat River in a deep, fairly narrow valley. There are large stands of bluegum trees that provide shelter, and if there is wind, create a fearful roaring sound in the night! There are two sets of jungle gyms for the kids. The river has been dammed and a sparkling clear pool created to swim in.

Please be aware that the area is frequently raided by baboons. This means keeping foodstuffs packed away and regularly dumping garbage in the custom-built garbage enclosure.

Accommodation

There are 48 campsites each with a braai place, picnic bench and electric point.

There are a number of houses for rent: Rietdak and Garskraal being the closest to the camping.

There are two serviced ablution blocks with plenty of hot water. Wood and ice can be purchased from the office (ice is in short supply and ran out the first day we were there).
