Theresa Lozier sent through the following letter from the winner of the 2012 Knysna Big 5 Challenge, Stuart Marais. Amongst other titles, he is the reigning Totalsports Challenge champion. This is what he had to say about his 2012 experience:

I look forward to the Big 5.

Us, is a term I use very often, but referring to a very unique group of people… Multisporters. Us multisporters are always looking for the next big thing, extreme challenge, body busting way to feel better about ourselves. We continue to push the limits of our bodies, bending the rules of what’s physically possible & what’s not. What better way to release the ‘feel good’ endorphins than the Big 5 challenge in Knysna.

Over the years I have been on the receiving end of so much positive feedback of the Big 5, so 2012 saw my first entry into the event. The event organisation surpassed all expectations & I look forward to joining a unique bunch of multisporters for a jam-packed week of activities along the garden route, one of the countries most sought after tourist destinations.

The Big 5 offers so much more than just a couple of events. It gives you the opportunity to experience the knysna Oyster festival from a completely different perspective.

The challenge is up there as one of my toughest weeks, but also as my most enjoyable. Doing the mtb 80km is extreme, so is the 21km half marathon, but how about both in 1 week? You earn plenty respect. The distances are all very do-able, so not only aimed at the hardcore maniacs.

A highlight of the 2012 event was the Featherbed Trail run through the reserve. It offers 3 different start times, with the night run being the most popular. An event, which alone should be on any athletes ‘bucket list’ I look forward to joining all the adrenaline junkies in Knysna for a fun filled week.
